England along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the final, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the pools play out according to the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
